Zoom Into a Picture

The Technique

The demo makes use of the Emphasis - Grow / Shrink animation. Normally when a high zoom factor is used picture quality in unacceptable. To avoid this start with a large picture and shrink it before you zoom back to the original size or a little larger.

There's a limit to how large the original can be. You should resize it to be LESS than twice the show width and height. Check in page set up and use a width and height a little less than twice the value there. It will be impossible to see the slide boundaries with such a large picture and to ensure the picture is centred show guides (view grid and guides) and select the picture and align. (see diagram1)

Now add the following custom animations to shrink the image.

1. An after previous Exit> "Disappear"
2. An after previous Emphasis> Grow/Shrink 52%*
3. An after previous Entrance> Appear

*To get 52% zoom enter 52% in the custom box and press ENTER.

This shrink needs to be fast so choose "very fast" and then in the timing box where it says 0.5 seconds manually change it to" 0.01 seconds". The purpose of the exit is to hide the zoom out.

The picture should appear at full screen (approx). You may need to tweak the zoom settings or the original picture size. If you see LARGE white bands around the picture then the original is more that twice the size of the screen! Now to zoom in add a Grow / Shrink of up to 200%. In the demo there is also a pan using a motion path. If you add this be careful not to pan off the edge of the picture!

If you wanted to zoom OUT from the picture omit the initial disappear, shrink and appear and change the zoom factor to about 52% .
